I decided to have a day off temples and to look around the town of Siem Reap. It is a superficially attractive town but I concluded from my walk that it was only really the riverside that was worth much time.
Elsewhere, there are shops and large resort hotels/spas but I did not get the impression that there was a long list of must-sees. However, I did not visit the museum which is meant to be excellent but is a bit far down the road on a hot day when I wante to walk rather than tuk tuk.
On my way back, I walked through the grounds of the Wat by my hotel - Wat Damnak. It is a nice oasis and I read about the work they do to provide work skills to girls who might otherwise have less rosy prospects. So maybe the top thing to do is to do something voluntary. However, for that you clearly need to be in Siem Reap for a considerable length of time and research carefully whether you are helping or making things worse.
